What’s Jim up to after Falcon?

Well I don’t quite know either (yet 😉 but I spotted a hint: his LinkedIn profile now says “President at NimbusDB”, with stated goal “To build a database in the clouds that scales to 1000X disk-based database systems.” Sounds good.

Which Jim? Jim Starkey, most recently known from MySQL’s Falcon storage engine.

  1. Another mention about this here; http://www.firebirdnews.org/

  2. Excellent, thanks for that.

  3. I am ambivalent about the “cloud” bandwagon. I just don’t see it happening, relying on somebody else’s data centers for business-critical data (or processing).

Joel on Software seems to agree: http://www.joelonsoftware.com/items/2008/05/01.html

  4. I want an installable cloud 🙂

  5. But wait, that means you would need a server with a capacity of…

    Oooh, coool!! 🙂

  6. A cloud doesn’t have to be on hardware owned by someone else. It’s potentially interesting for adding more capacity to your own server farm without having to do the work of partitioning the data set to scale out.

  7. It can be your own cloud. Clouds start small and build up.

And then it might rain 😉

  8. Or maybe drizzle 🙂
