Open Source Database Conference (OpenDBcon)

This is the last day of the OpenDBcon, and it’s been fun. Combined with the International PHP Conference in Frankfurt, it’s an interesting crowd. I’ve had nice talks with people from the other OSS DBs, such as Gregory Burd (BerkelyDB, Sleepycat), Josh Berkus, Gavin Sherry and Peter Eisentraut (PostgreSQL), Fred Toussi (HSQLDB), Dan Debrunner (Derby), and others from Firebird, SQLite and Ingres (sorry, I put my cards in my suitcase already and my brain is on overload from all the names).

There of course also other people from MySQL AB here, I was able to catch up with “my” Community VP Kaj, and also Lenz Grimmer who be focusing on MySQL Community in Europe from December. Lenz has been a key member in our build engineering team, many of you will know his name already from release announcement messages and build bug issues.

Brian Aker made a brief stopover here while travelling to Athens, and we presented the MySQL Roadmap session together. It’s always cool to catch up with Brian: so many ideas and developments buzzing around, and Brian is in the know.

Right now I’m listening to my German training colleague Kai Voigt, who is giving an overview of the MySQL 5.1 features that we are currently working on. Among the key features there are partitioning, row-based replication, global cluster replication, a cron-like event manager, and some more cool stuff.
