So, how do you get more free time? Simple, you quit your job. I did. Yes, seriously.
Well, I was employee#25 at MySQL AB (from August 2001), that’s nearly 6 years – I reckon I’ve done my time 😉
What’s next? That’s not really the point, I haven’t taken another job elsewhere.
For starters I’m taking a few months off, spending more time with my wife and daughter, getting more exercise, and catching up on some other stuff.
Arjen, I wish you the very best of luck and hope you get to enjoy the time you now have … and that eventually this move leads to expanding your horizons again. Bold move, much respect and kudos.
Really sorry to see you leave, have a nice time with your family then I hope you will still be in the open-source world
Good luck with the change. I’m sure it will work out great for you. – Rich
Enjoy the free time.

Arjen,
Good luck with your ventures. 6 years is a long time at a modern progressive company, people just don’t work long periods at employers anymore.
I know in the past to get free time on a job, more specifically even getting vacation time, I’ve had to quit 2 jobs.
Life is short. Live Life. Life is an adventure!

That’s… significant.
Although as they say, “you can’t keep a good man down”. After the requisite time of rest and relaxation I rather suspect we will see on on some new venture and making more remarkable changes to the way we do things..
Really thanks for every bit of code you wrote because now entire world can get use of that, in my opinion this is the greatest gift for a creator – programmer.
Long life to you and your family ! (best wishes from open source community from Moldova)
Thanks.
But just to be clear, I was never a developer at MySQL.
I only wrote just a few lines of MySQL code and created a couple of patches.
My work was related to documentation, community, conferences, training and support.
You did wonderful work in the MySQL community. Your wife and daughter deserve more time! Enjoy, and I hope to be hearing what your next venture is.

Arjen,
When you come back online, give me a ping. I’d love to hear what you decide to do post-MySQL.
