There appear to be some problems with threading on the AMD64.

Are you really sure about this? The last time I looked at a customer problem related to this we just had them uninstall Debian and install Redhat. Their problems went away.
We have a lot of customers on AMD today, its easily the most popular 64bit platform we have.
The focus appears to be gravitating towards Debian-based distros. Peter Zaitsev responded also, noting that SuSE has never had these probs and that there’s a fix in RedHat from way back early 2004. The user is now chasing this avenue. So this may all be soon sorted out.
