Grand Prize winners of the MySQL 5 Contest – and extras

With apologies for the delay (I got sick), and some deliberation, we are now ready to announce the Grand Prize winners of the MySQL 5 Contest. According to the rules, to be eligible to win the grand prize, community members not only had to submit bug reports about MySQL 5, but also maintain a blog and aggregate it to Planet MySQL.
A few people write entire essays about little projects, tips, best practises, and code snippets on their blog, and the winners fall into that category: they really make Planet MySQL into a medium that people want to read every day!

What do the lucky winners get? One fabulously tiny iPod nano, a pass to the MySQL Users Conference 2006, plus dinner with the MySQL DevTeam at the MySQL Users Conference 2006.

And the winners are…

Roland of course has been writing good stuff for quite a while now, in his blog and at MYSQLDevelopment.com with Andrew Gilfrin.
Beat is our “new kid on the block” but right from start he’s written some excellent items – yea they’re sometimes critical of some MySQL technical or development aspects, but that’s fine: such sensible feedback is very valuable! (and hey, this only goes to show that you don’t even have to suck up to win 😉
Last but not least, Markus started the db4free service specifically with MySQL 5, also explicitly encouraging his users to test the new features and submit bug reports. An original and great effort.

All worthy winners, and Kaj and I are looking forward to seeing them at the MySQL Users Conference (we hope they can all make it!), and of course introduce them to the rest of the MySQL gang! Congratulations to you all!

To show our appreciation for our valued bug reporting community members, we also decided to give out extra iPod nanos to a few more users who have submitted MySQL 5 bug reports. The winners of these iPod nanos are:

  • Yoshiaki Tajika (Japan)
  • Angel Martin (Spain)

So, congratulations to you both, also!

Hehe, this was so much fun! I feel a bit like Santa (or St.Nicolas, the original who is celebrated in Holland and a few other parts of Europe 😉

  1. Yay! I look forward to meeting them!

  2. Hey, just a quick comment to let you know how much I appreciate it. And, well, I didn’t mind sucking up at all, as a matter of fact, I can’t wait ’till the MySQL 6.0 challenges and contests 😉

Nah, seriously; I just got hooked on trying the features, and catching bugs but to tell you the truth: in retrospective I don’t think I did that good at all in that department. I mean, about half of my submissions were just feature requests; hardly any help when you’re trying to get a version production ready.

Anyway, looking forward to attend the conference, and meeting up with the team. So, CU!

    Roland Bouman
