Debconf5 in Helsinki, Finland (10-17 July)

MySQL is sponsoring Debconf5 in Helsinki. It’s the annual Debian developers meeting, so pretty much all techie focused. There’s a lot of other big names involved. I reckon the Debian project does great work.

They give a shining example when it comes to adherence to licensing (the Open Source Initiative Open Source guidelines were based on the Debian principles) – always very correct, I appreciate that.

People often complain about the Debian stable release cycle… yes it’s slow, but it’s solid. Ok, perhaps it’s too solid, but who is to decide that? Security and other bugs are vigorously chased down.

I don’t use Debian myself, but I certainly appreciate the effort that goes into it. Many other GNU/Linux distributions use Debian as a basis. One of the new and increasingly popular ones being Ubuntu, of course. It has a shorter release cycle, but they can pull that by having a limited focus… they include way fewer packages, so that makes it easier to create a stable environment.

Anyway, Debconf5. Admission is free. If you happen to be in the nice town of Helsinki, and you’re a serious hacker, this may be for you!
